I’m Ryan Cobley, founder of Tyretalk.
My career across professional motorsport, driver instruction, and the automotive industry has been driven by a lifelong passion for vehicles — but above all, road safety.
Early in my career, while serving as a Special Constable, I attended serious and fatal road traffic collisions and saw first-hand how small decisions can have devastating, irreversible consequences. That experience fundamentally shaped my perspective on risk, responsibility, and the importance of prevention.
That focus became deeply personal when my father-in-law suffered a severe, life-changing brain injury after being struck by a vehicle — reinforcing just how fragile safety on our roads can be.
With over 15 years’ experience as a professional motorsport driver and instructor, combined with roles delivering technical training on vehicle safety systems for manufacturers, I have developed a unique understanding of how vehicles behave at the limits of grip — and how easily those limits can be exceeded in everyday driving.
One critical issue stands out consistently:

Modern vehicles are equipped with increasingly sophisticated safety technology, but those systems can only perform as designed if the tyres fitted to the vehicle are capable of delivering the necessary performance.
Through Tyretalk, I translate complex tyre and vehicle safety principles into clear, practical insight — helping motorists, organisations, and industry professionals make safer decisions, improve standards, and ultimately reduce the risk of serious and fatal collisions.
Changing the Way the Industry Communicates About Tyres
Industry Experience
During my 12 years as a Training Manager with one of the UK’s largest tyre wholesalers, I observed a consistent industry challenge: many tyre retailers had limited product knowledge and rarely explained the real-world safety differences between tyre options to their customers.
This knowledge gap often meant that purchasing decisions were influenced more by price or margin than by suitability, performance, or safety — despite tyres being one of the most critical components affecting vehicle behaviour.
Through structured training programmes and technical coaching, I worked to bridge this gap. I designed and delivered education that helped sales teams move beyond basic product recommendations to become informed advisors, capable of explaining how tyre choice directly impacts braking, grip, stability, and overall vehicle safety.
My work supported a wide range of organisations, including independent garages, national retail chains, franchised dealership networks, and vehicle manufacturers, including Volkswagen Group and Volvo UK.
By improving understanding of the critical safety role tyres play, we saw measurable improvements in both customer confidence and staff capability — reinforcing the value of knowledge-led decision-making across the industry..
